Wednesday March 1 vs. The Manchester Monarchs
ELMIRA, N.Y. - March 1, 2017 - Andy Iles made 38 saves on 39 shots and the Elmira Jackals (11-37-7-1) beat the Manchester Monarchs (30-16-6-4), 2-1, Wednesday night at First Arena. The win gives Elmira four wins over the Monarchs in 2016-17.
The Jackals continued the momentum from Tuesday's three-goal third period with a fast start Wednesday night. Just 6:39 into the game, the Jackals converted on their first power play of the game. Davis Vandane threw the puck to the net and it was initially stopped by Sam Brittain. Justin Kea, Mark Bennett and a pile of bodies fought for the puck and Brittain ended up out of the crease. Bennett eventually found the puck and hit the open net for a 1-0 Jackals lead.
Just 50 seconds later, Elmira opened a 2-0 lead on a left circle shot from Matt Stanisz. He got the pass from Luke Sandler and got in toward the circle before wristing one on goal. The puck leaked through Brittain at 7:29 to give the Jackals a 2-0 advantage.
The Monarchs responded with a strong second period, but Elmira maintained a lead after 40 minutes. Manchester finally got on the board 7:08 into the second on a successful 2-on-1 rush. A Jackals defenseman fell down on the play, which opened up the 2-on-1 opportunity and Matt Leitner saucered a pass to Joe Diamond at the right circle. Diamond one-timed a shot that grazed off the glove of Iles and in to make it a 2-1 game.
The Jackals carried that 2-1 lead into the third period and Iles made it hold up with another excellent period. After stoning 18 shots in the second he came back and turned aside all 10 Manchester tries in the third to give the Jackals a 2-1 win.
