Saturday March 11 vs. The Reading Royals
ELMIRA, NY - March 11, 2017 - The Reading Royals (36-21-2-2) scored three goals in the first period and took down the Elmira Jackals (14-39-7-1), 4-1, Saturday night at First Arena in the final game between the rivals. Reading won the DeMet's Candy Cup Challenge series with nine wins in the 10-game series. The result snapped the Jackals season-high three-game winning streak.
As has been the case throughout the season series, the Royals offense struck early and often against the Jackals, building a 3-1 lead in the first 20 minutes. Justin Crandall opened the scoring 5:09 into the first, banging in a rebound near the left circle. Jesper Pettersson took the point shot, which came high on Jason Kasdorf, who made the stop, but the puck popped to Crandall near the circle for a 1-0 lead.
The Jackals pulled even less than two minutes later on a deflection on a point shot. Brycen Martin handled the puck along the blue line then sent a no-look shot toward the net. Kyle Rankin tipped the shot past Martin Ouellette for his sixth goal of the season and his first since Dec. 30, tying the game 1-1 at 6:58.
The Royals opened the lead again with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart. First, Matt Salhany scored his first professional goal at 14:42 on a one-timer from near the right circle faceoff dot to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Then Florian Iberer took advantage of a pinballing puck, which went to him near the post, where he sent into an open net at 15:34 to give the Royals a 3-1 lead, which carried into the second period.
Reading extended the lead in the second period with a shorthanded goal by Robbie Czarnik at 9:26. He received the pass right in front of the crease and made several moves to get Kasdorf to go down before sliding it into the net for a 4-1 Royals lead.
The Jackals put some pressure on the Royals throughout the third period, but they could solve Ouellette, who finished with 26 saves as the Royals beat the Jackals, 4-1, to close out the series.
