ELMIRA, NY - March 24, 2017 - The Elmira Jackals (16-41-7-1) scored five unanswered goals, including four in the third period, and steamrolled the Manchester Monarchs (33-21-7-4), 6-2, Friday night at First Arena. The win gives the Jackals back-to-back wins and evens the season-series with the Monarchs at five wins apiece with four games remaining head-to-head.
In a quick moving first period, neither team found the back of the net, keeping it scoreless after 20 minutes. The Jackals managed 11 shots in the first, but failed on two power plays while the Monarchs ended with nine first period shots..
The scoring picked up in the second period and both teams held a lead at one point in the middle stanza, but at the end of the frame it was all square 2-2. Mark Bennett opened the scoring 1:36 into the period on a shot from the left circle. He received a pass from Sam Povorozniouk and wristed a shot toward the net. It bounced off the leg of a Monarchs defenseman and bounded into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Not long after, the Monarchs tied the game at 3:09 as Tyler Elbrecht used his skate to direct a pass across into an open net, tying the game 1-1. Less than three minutes after that, the Monarchs grabbed their first lead on a power-play deflection by Mario Puskarich, giving Manchester a 2-1 lead at 6:03.
The Jackals pulled even at 14:33 on a one-timer from Sam Povorozniouk. Matt Stanisz dumped the puck into the offensive zone and Mark Bennett tracked it down along the right wing wall before zipping a pass to Povorozniouk in the slot where he hammered home his 18th goal of the season to tie the game 2-2.
That late second period goal started a run of five straight markers for the Jackals, who rolled off four unanswered in the final frame. Elmira got the eventual game-winner from Sebastien Sylvestre at 5:12 of the third as he cashed in on a 2-on-2 with Nathan Moon. Sylvestre set up Moon at the right circle and his shot was stopped by Jack Flinn, but Sylvestre buried the rebound for a 3-2 Jackals lead.
Reigning Sher-Wood Hockey/ECHL Player of the Week Kenton Miller picked up where he left off by giving the Jackals a 4-2 lead with a power-play goal at 8:50. The puck came to Davis Vandane at the right blue line. His point shot was deflected not once, but twice, before finding twine for a 4-2 Jackals advantage. Casey Thrush got the initial deflection then Miller got the last touch for his 28th goal of the season.
Elmira struck again on the power play later in the period as Thrush cashed in on a loose puck in the slot after an extended scramble near the Monarchs crease. Thrush's eighth goal made it 5-2 Jackals at 15:30 and then the Jackals capped the scoring run with Mark Bennett's second goal of the game, a shorthanded goal at 18:15, scoring on a wraparound for a 6-2 lead, which held as the final score.
