Friday January 27 vs. The Fort Wayne Komets
ELMIRA, N.Y. - January 27, 2017 - The Fort Wayne Komets (24-13-4-0) scored twice in the third period and held off a late Elmira Jackals (9-26-5-0) push to win, 3-2, Friday night at First Arena, giving the Komets a pair of one-goal wins against the Jackals this week.
In the second game in three nights between the clubs, the Komets picked up a 1-0 lead late in the opening frame. The Komets pressured in the Jackals zone and Curtis Leonard skated across the blue line to the center point before taking a shot. Gabriel Desjardins tipped the puck in the slot and it got past Jason Kasdorf to give Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead at 14:29.
The Jackals played a strong second period to pull even with the Komets. They didn't waste time to tie the score at one, as Matt Lane harassed the Komets in their zone. He scooped up the puck in the right corner then passed it to the right point to Steven Kaunisto, who sent a puck towards the net. Casey Thrush found a loose puck rebound to tie the game on his second goal of the season just three minutes into the second.
Fort Wayne opened the third period with a carryover power play from the second and the Komets took advantage to open a 2-1 lead. They threw the puck to the net and on the third of fourth try, Garrett Thompson buried it just 47 seconds into the third.
Much of the remainder of the third period was played without a goal, including a failed penalty shot attempt by Matt Lane, until Fort Wayne doubled the lead at 18:06 when Mason Baptista tipped in a pass from Thompson. The goal gave the Komets a two-goal lead, which was just enough.
Moments later, with an empty-net for a 6-on-5 advantage, Sebastien Sylvestre pulled the Jackals back within one. The Jackals won a left circle faceoff and Matt Stanisz passed it to the right circle to Sylvestre. His initial shot was blocked, but he settled down the rebound and snapped in his 11th goal of the season to make it a 3-2 game.
The Jackals would once again empty their net and Kenton Miller had the final chance near the crease, but it missed wide as the Komets held on for a 3-2 win.
